Warden Message: Cyclone Sidr Approaching Bangladesh
Consular Affairs Bulletins
South / Central Asia - Bangladesh 14 Nov 2007
U.S. Embassy Dhaka issued the following Warden Message on November 14: This Warden Message is to alert all U.S. citizens that Cyclone SIDR, located 760 miles South of Calcutta, with maximum sustained winds of 105 knots gusting to 130 knots, and equivalent to a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, is forecast to continue north-northwest towards Calcutta or Bangladesh whilst intensifying further. Sidr has turned out to be much stronger than anticipated and continues to intensify as it heads north into the Bay of Bengal. The U.S. Embassy will continue to monitor Cyclone SIDR’s track, and will issue updated messages if SIDR appears to threaten Bangladesh. In the event of a cyclone, U.S. citizens are urged to locate shelter, monitor media reports, and follow all official instructions.

BERLIN, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The German government announced on Monday that it will provide 1.2 million euros (about 1.75 million U.S. dollars) in emergency aid for the victims of cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh.
The German Foreign Ministry on Monday raised its emergency assistance to Bangladesh to one million euros, doubling the sum pledged two day ago. The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development also announced to release additional 200,000 euros to the World Food Program to help provide relief to over 400,000 people affected by the cyclone.
The deadly cyclone Sidr hit Bangladesh's coastal districts Thursday night, killing over 2,600 people. It was one of the fiercest cyclones that hit the region of Bangladesh in 131 years.

Bangladesh death toll could rise after cyclone
Updated Fri. Nov. 16 2007 10:09 PM ET
CTV.ca News
At least 1,100 people have reportedly been killed by a powerful cyclone that has pummelled Bangladesh.
Friday, aid workers desparately struggled to help hundreds of thousands of survivors of Tropical Cyclone Sidr. More than 600,000 people have been left homeless by the storm, the worst storm in a decade. Millions more are without power.
Tropical Cyclone Sidr struck late Thursday, powered by 240-kilometre-an-hour winds.
The United News of Bangladesh -- citing information from reporters across the region -- calculated the death toll at about 1,100 by Friday. Emergency officials are still trying to get reports of injuries, deaths, and damage from some of the worst hit areas. More than 100 fishing boats were still missing on Friday. The fear is that the death will rise even higher.
In Ottawa, Syed Khundoker, Bangladesh's Acting High Commissioner to Canada, told CTV News, as bad as the situation appears, Cyclone Sidr appears to have been a lot less deadly than in the past.
In 1970, more than 500,000 people were killed by a cyclone. In 1991, more than 140,000 people died in another storm. Since then Bangladesh has improved its storm tracking and early warning systems.
"We have learned from our previous experiences," said Khundoker.
"It has helped us a lot and helped us keep the deaths (to a) minimum."
Canadian aid groups are mobilizing to help Bangladesh, and officials in Ottawa are now determining how much aid to send.
Driving rain and metre-high storm surges struck low-lying areas and some offshore islands in the 15 coastal districts in Sidr's path.
To avoid the storm, thousands of villagers moved to concrete cyclone shelters Thursday.
Ali Imam Majumder, a senior government official, said from Dhaka that emergency rations were being delivered to evacuees.
However, relief workers struggled to ferry food and medical supplies to thousands of survivors, aid workers said. Washed-out roads and debris blocked emergency crews from reaching victims stranded by flood waters.
"We have lost everything," local farmer Moshararf Hossain told a UNB reporter. "We have nowhere to go."
Alam, another local farmer, said two of his brothers died in the storm.
"Nothing can compensate for my loss, but still I need support from the government," Alam said.
The World Food Programme is also sending food for 400,000 people, reports the BBC.
In the coastal districts of Barguna, Bagerhat, Barisal and Bhola, residents said the storm destroyed thousands of flimsy huts, crops and fish farms while uprooting trees and electric and telephone poles, reports The Associated Press.
"There has been lot of damage to houses made of mud and bamboo and about 60 to 80 percent of the trees have been uprooted," Vince Edwards, the Bangladesh director of the U.S.-based Christian aid group World Vision, told AP.
A low-lying delta, Bangladesh is often hit by seasonal cyclones and floods.
By early Friday, the cyclone had turned into a tropical storm and was moving across the northeast part of the country.
